What is a Factur-X invoice?

A Factur-X invoice is a PDF with an XML file tucked inside it. You read the PDF. Accounting software reads the XML, where the invoice number, the amounts, the VAT and the bank details sit in labeled fields.

Factur-X is a French and German format (in Germany it’s called ZUGFeRD). Since Sep 1, 2026, every VAT-registered business in France must be able to receive e-invoices. Many arrive as Factur-X, others as bare XML in UBL or CII, which you can’t read without a tool. This page is here to open them.

The difference between Factur-X, UBL and CII

FormatWhat you receiveCan you read it as is?
Factur-XA PDF with an XML file embedded in itYes, the PDF part
UBLAn XML file on its ownNo
CIIAn XML file on its ownNo

All three follow the European standard EN 16931, and the reader opens all three.

How to read an e-invoice

  1. Drop the PDF or XML file into the box above, or click to pick it on your device.
  2. The reader detects the format and shows the key fields, from the seller’s name to the IBAN.
  3. Look at the EN 16931 checklist. Each field gets a green check when it’s there and a red cross when it’s missing.
  4. Scroll down for the whole invoice, with its lines and the VAT for each rate. To print it or save it as a PDF, use the converter.

When the PDF has no XML inside

Then it’s an ordinary PDF and doesn’t count as an e-invoice, and the reader tells you it couldn’t find the XML. Ask your supplier for the XML file, or download it from your accredited platform, then drop it here.

Questions

How do I open an XML invoice I got by email?

Save the attachment to your computer, then drag it into the reader. The format is detected for you, and the invoice shows up in readable form.

Are my files sent anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser. The file never reaches a server and nothing is kept, so closing the tab clears it.

Does the checklist prove my invoice is compliant?

No. It checks that seven fields are present: the invoice number, the issue date, the seller, the total before VAT, the VAT, the total with VAT and the currency. It doesn’t replace a formal validation or the checks your accredited platform runs.

Can I save the invoice as a PDF?

Not from the reader. Use the Factur-X to PDF converter, which opens your browser’s print dialog. If you also want tidy file names, the bulk renamer handles that.
